When conceiving MMU02 we chose to go in the direction of extreme smoothness and balance: Okumidori’s roundness and moderation had to perfectly complement the depth and flamboyance of “shaded” tea favorite, Uji’s very own Samidori variety. The result is a fruity, smooth and all round balanced blend.

We conceived 3 matcha blends with very distinct flavor profiles. They are each made of several green tea varieties, and blended according to our (secret) ratios.
MMU01: Sharp blend of Okumidori, Zairai, Samidori and Yabukita.

Our teas are one-of-a-kind, and extremely rare: less than 100kg are produced every year.
Making high grade matcha is no walk in the park! We are lucky to enjoy the many exceptional conditions of the fabulous Uji Terroir.
But then, matcha does not craft itself: we craft our tea both in complete respect of the ancestral Uji traditions, as well as through rigorous experimentations in blending and grinding.
Through our vessels, objects and ceramics we reinvent the ritual of tea ceremony, paying homage to Japanese minimalism: leave traditions, start anew.
Who Are We?
Material Matcha Uji 宇治 is the story of two friends: Morgan & Etienne, who went on a quest for purity. Living in Japan for years, they completely let go and embarked on a journey to find, salvage and re-create the rarest tea making techniques.
Material Matcha Uji 宇治 was funded and initiated via a massively successful Kickstarter campaign raising $130,000 from an initial $10,000 goal, becoming the most funded pure “Drink” project ever!
I have tried Matcha tea from 2 other brands which was awful and thought Matcha tastes that way and avoided completely. I have tried this after seeing the kickstarter campaign, to give one more last chance but its a huge success this time. Expensive but worth the money we spent.

This is the third matcha I’ve tried so far and it tastes considerably better than the other premium japanese matcha tea I tried. This powder tastes clean and has no hint of bitterness, it’s bright green and mixes well with water. Plus it leaves me refreshed and energised. It’s a bit more expensive than some other matchas but it’s worth it I think.

A very smooth and delicate blend with no hint of bitterness. I’ve tried various brands of ceromonial grade matcha and this is definitely one of the best. Fast delivery and exceptional packaging. Looking forward to my next order.
